Trask transmission cover 7,000 mile review

The HD unit was back ordered until May, so ripped the band aid off and got the Trask vented transmission cover about 7,000 miles ago.

Today I removed my breather to check the intake. The mileage since install included lots of high RPM interstate riding and my dealership filling my motor oil up to the point where it was at the top of the dip stick even when cold. Still, not a single drop of oil in my intake.

This isn't so much an endorsement for Trask as much as it is advocating to vent your crank case! For what it's worth I don't like the vented oil caps. All of them have puked oil on the right side of the motor.

They put one on my bike when I did the motor build and I still had/have a lot of blow by on that one. I reconfigured to external breaking on my intake and leave little "baby poop" stains on the pavement after I park anywhere. I think without the Trask cover though it would be far worse. I put one on the wife's bike last weekend when I installed her cam. I haven't pushed the bike in the 15 or so miles I have ridden it so I can't tell what it has done for hers, but I'm sure I will see good results there as well.

I trust Kevin Baxter as an engine builder and he is an advocate of venting from the transmission cover. It was good to see that HD realized this was the way to go when they rolled out the 24's and it confirms Kevin's logic. Glad to see that this is working out for you. I know you were bummed that the HD one didn't come in before you had to go Trask. Heck of a price difference.

They vent it back into the intake because of EPA regulations. They can't just let oil vent to the atmosphere or drip onto the ground. It's the same reason vehicle's have some sort of PCV valve or system which literally does the same thing. PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation.

I put one of the 24 and newer top covers on my 22RGS and it has a slight gap at the front, enough to slide a five thou feeler gauge between the cover and tranny. Took it back off and checked the gasket and put a straight edge on it and it looked OK. Only four bolts on the new cover. No leaks with a couple hundred miles but I don’t like the way it is, was wondering if anyone that has the new cover could take a look at theirs and see if they have a slight gap at the front. Thanks in advance….
