Wife and i have 3rd week of May off and SHE suggested a road trip on the RG (i know, she is pretty awesome). we'd be leaving central NC on a Saturday and return following friday or saturday. Leading vote getters at this time are down the Atlantic coast to Miami and back up thr gulf coast w/ stops in charleston, daytona, Miami, Tampa, and panama city and west across tennessee w/ stops in Gatlinburg, Nashville, and memphis, possibly chattanooga on the way back. we rode BRP and Deal's gap in september and have been to FL numerous times by car for other vacations. Also been to Gatlinburg a few times. Any other suggestions or recommendations for these trips or something completely different? also, we both hate COLD weather.

Personally speaking, going any farther South than Sebastian (and Earls) is a waste of time unless you're going to the keys. In fact, I make sure the tank is filled so we don't even get off the super-slab between Sebastian and the extreme South edge of Miami (Miami and all the associated burbs are behind us).

Suggestion - make sure you do "The Loop". It's a very accessible "old Florida" swamp trail type asphalt road that's real close to Destination Daytona (Rossmeyer HD joint - get directions from them).

Then go over to Daytona Beach, then go back to the mainland, and take US HWY 1 south from Daytona all the way to FL SR 528 (a super-slab). Take 528 East to Cape Canaveral and finally take the coast road (HWY A1A) South through Cocoa Beach, etc. all the way down to Wabasso Beach before you go back to the mainland (Sebastion) and the trip back North.

If you decide to do something like this, e-mail me and I'll send a Google Maps route to y'all.

I've been thinking of doing a loop around the Great Lakes. Going through Toronto, Sault St. Marie and Thunder Bay to Duluth. Picking up a museum tour in Milwaukee while I'm in the area.

If you have a whole week, I would head west. I have been up and down the east coast which is awesome, but it seems entirely different heading west. Around the great lakes sounds awesome as well.

How far west could we get w/ some sightseeing and getting back home on the bike in a week? not opposed to logging lots of miles, but also don't want to spend 12 hours/day on the bike everyday.

No disrespect but Florida would be a waste of time and fuel... flat and not a lot to see or do and traffic is a PITA.

I'd be looking to go west and explore the Smokey's... east coast would be cool the further north you get in May... maybe do the Outer Banks and swing up to Roanoke and do the Blue Ridge and country roads?

If you have interest and time book it over to Birmingham AL and enjoy Barber Motorsports Museum?

to answer your question as to how far with your time restraints and no 12 hour days plus some sight seeing , I would say no more than 1000 miles in one direction , maybe even a bit less ..

Get an atlas and compass , and draw a 500 and 1000 mile circle from your place , be amazed at how far out you can go ..

Since you've done Florida many times and the west is a little far to get to the really good stuff how about Pennsylvania. Gettysburg, lots to see and very moving place. Do a MOCO factory tour at York, not far from Gettysburg. Ride west to Shanksville and the Flight 93 Memorial, again a very moving place. Go to Hershey and the chocolate factory. See where Punxsatawney Phil hangs out. On and on....lots to see and the roads, man there is some great riding up there and getting there....

You said you've road the BRP but have you done Skyline drive that begins on the north end of the Blue Ridge? You could ride it on the way up.

SWI was in Gettysburg and EVERYONE was way impressed with the area and all said they'd like to go back. I know one day I hope to

My wife and I did the Key West ride last year via backroads through Virginia, TN, NC, SC, through Augusta to Jacksonville - down to Brevard Co. to visit family and then Interstate / Turnpike past Miami and down the Keys. Riding the Overseas Highway and going to Key West is a worthwhile ride, especially if you can spend a couple nights in Key West enjoying everything there during the day and night. There are a lot of good roads in Florida avoiding I-95, etc. but you may want to slam some Freeway to save time in places. The Tamiami trail US41 across the 'Glades was also a nice ride. Easy cruising with good scenery and lots of gators and other wildlife. It was a very fun ride and my wife enjoyed it too. You have to do Key West at least once, that is a rule somewhere.
