All,
Since I got the bike in March, I have been having a weird problem. It had 5000 miles on it (bought used at a dealership). Every once in while as I down shift, it will not go into gear. Most of the time it's from 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to first. I adjusted the clutch and last week. Now when I down shift it does not go into the lower gear at all. I have to completely stop. Then it can be down shifted to first. I took a turn Saturday and the thing wanted to die on me. Didn't lay it down but had a cheek pucker though!!!! Any ideas?

Tyranny??

Listen bud, we can help you with your motorcycle, but you're on your own with the 'ole lady............

Anyway..........
First thing I'd check is your linkage adjustment, and the linkage itself. #1, check to see if the shift lever is hitting something in it's travel, especially if you use the heel peg for up-shifting you might not have noticed if the front of the shifter has dropped.
#2 also check to see that the ball joints and lock nuts on the ends of the linkage are tight and in good shape, those things have a bad habit of loosening up and causing issues. #3 check that the shift lever is tight where it goes in the trans, they'll loosen up and cause problems also.

If none of the above shows a problem, and you haven't changed riding shoes lately, it's likely a shift drum or fork problem, which will likely need to go to see your local wrencher dude.

If your sure you adjusted the clutch properly in the basket, maybe even change primary fluid and check proper level . Then what TDK said.

Dan,
Not sure where your at around Pittsburgh but there are at least 5 dealers close, within an hours ride if its a warranty issue any dealer can fix it not just the one you got it from

Eagle,
Yea I live close to one and work close to another. Was thinking about going to Three Rivers HD Saturday morning. I live about 20 minute ride from there. Planning to get there early and take a book to read. I am not sure that the place I bought it at did, so I was going to have them do the 5000 mile and go over it to see if it has any other surprises. So I have a baseline to go from. The place I bought it from was a pain to get them to tell me anything at all about the bike. So calling and asking if it was done is pointless. A small pile of cash now does not bother me to know.

Dan , while your at 3 rivers they can check the vin and see what dealer services were performed , they may even be able to tell you the previous owner or contact them for you to see what mods might have been done.

I know that a stage 1 has been done to it. (no backing plate on the air filter and changed out slip ons). Anything else I have no clue. Good idea and thanks for the thought. Will do that as well.
