Doesn't sound right, I've had 2, and they both came right apart. Are you sure you have all the screws? Also it's been a while since I did mine, but is there a bolt in the middle?

Is the oil filter adapter supposed to be difficult to take apart? I took the 6 screws out and expected the adapter to separate in my hands. I have tried smoting it with a rubber hammer and still no separation. Not sure what else to do without damaging it, as a screw driver isn't going to pry it apart without scarring it pretty bad.

I believe that the threaded stud the filter screws to also holds it together.
