When the bike is started for the first time the voltage reads about 10 and the check engine and battery light comes on. Sometimes it will go back to normal after a few miles. But usually, I have to stop after several miles. Turn the bike off then fire it back up and everything is normal for the rest of the day. Even if I let it cool during my ride it never has an issue.
If I don't turn it off and back on to clear it. The battery won't charge.
Any ideas? Voltage regulator?

Mark, are you getting any Codes?
How old is your battery?
Could be a bad battery, Voltage Regulator or stator.

I haven't gone down to have codes pulled yet.
The battery is new. That's the first thing I replaced.

Heck, I didn't know there was a recall on the regulator for this issue. I guess I've been lucky for the past 5 years. Just ordered one. Hopefully that's it.
Thanks for the reply.

You're welcome Mark.
I have a 2012 Custom and I replaced my Voltage Regulator, as a precaution, with a Cycle Electric VR and am very pleased with it.
Best of luck to you.
Keep us posted on how you make out.
Don't hesitate to ask for additional help if needed.

If you get a CE light and your voltage light comes on, it usually is an indication of a stator or regulator issue.

My 2013 was doing the same thing. I bought the Cycle Electric CE-608, the one that mounts above the oil cooler on the down tubes and it is working great, plus i'm not getting the heat off of the oil cooler on my VR now so it should last longer.

Known problem on 2012's. Mine started crapping out this spring, acting the same way. I bought the Cycle Electric unit, nice piece.
