Hello,

In addition to my RGU I have a '13 SG. Up until last month I was only losing less then 5 lbs of air from my rear shocks, which I have checked monthly along with my tire pressures for the past year. Last month's check (Jan 30th) my no-loss HD pump showed a loss of 20 lbs (25psi down to 5 psi). I pumped them back up to 25psi and checking them today (5 days later) and my pump read 5psi.

So I pumped them back up to 25psi and road off to my HD dealer, a 30 minute ride over a combination of county & residential two lane roads. I explained all the above to the service writer and he says that amount of psi loss is normal. He said HD air shocks lose 1psi per day when not ridden, and even more when ridden due to a venting feature when under sudden compression (ie...pothole) so as not to blow out a seal.

I asked him to show me in writing this "normal" air loss feature in either a HD policy paper and/or a pdf file, he was unable to produce any such thing. He then brought out a maintenance service manual for FLH touring bikes and showed me a section which read that if 5 - 10 psi loss is noted in a overnight period then there were various service checks to be performed to determine where the loss was coming from. Only thing was the manual was dated 2000 and the section he showed me was under front air forks. (I later read my old 2006 manual and it also read 5 -10 psi loss for the rear air shock section).

At this point I did not call him on what he presented to me and instead asked if he would check my air shock with one of their pumps. He did so and his no-loss pump read 15psi, a loss of 10psi in a two hour period that included my 30 minute ride. He again said that was normal for a HD air shock. I requested he keep the SG and conduct a overnight leak down test. He told me again my air shocks were behaving normally but he reluctantly agreed to perform the test.

My concern is if this leak down test results in anywhere between a 1 to 4psi loss, then it will not meet HD's service requirements. In my mind a 1 to 4psi loss a month would be acceptable but the same loss in a 24 hour period is not. Am I out of line or being unreasonable in my expectation??

Put a couple of drops of dish detergent into a bottle with water and spray on the junctions of the air line. Any bubbles should appear where the leak is. Be sure to spray the valve stem.

What stan said, check for leaks and that the fittings are tight. Mine leak down over time but nothing like yours. You can also install independent fittings on each shock , which will help keep leaks down to a minimum.

That is not normal to loose that amount of air in that period of time! I would definately ask for a replacement, especially if you still have warranty. If you don't know by now, service favorite saying is " thats normal" and 9 out of 10 times they are wrong...IMO.

Definitely not normal. ..... some dealers cease to amaze me at what they will say is normal. :rolleyes:

Agreed, not normal, and your dealer is being... well... a dealer.

However, why not check the simple things before getting yourself all upset and involving a dealer? Check for leaks. Use some soapy water. Make sure the valve core isn't loose.

If you can't find any obvious leaks, at least you can go to the dealer armed with some real information.

Yes, I'm aware that my loss of air could be the lines, the fittings, or the shocks and also how to check the lines/fitting. If I was not still under warranty I would have conducted those checks. Since I am still under warranty I chose to take it to the dealer to troubleshoot/correct, and instead I was told everything was "normal".

What I'm asking about is the service writer's insistence that my psi losses,under the conditions I stated, were "normal" per HD "policy". Has anyone else experienced these "normal operating" replies irt air shock pressure problems.

Here is one more NO not "normal" for ya ;) and they are just trying to help.........

Never had any problems with the rear air shocks, so I can not answer that question.

You could buy a couple of she after valves and air the shocks independently to test them or try reseating the lines, if you push the little red caps down then cut the hose nice and straight above the old indentation and then reseat them it usually solves the leak problem

A leak of that magnitude sounds like a lot of small leaks. Like bleeding to death from paper cuts.
The fitting may need to be tightened on each shock. The push to connect fittings will leak also. Press the ring in around the tube and pull it out. Trim off 1/4" from the end with a razor cutter. The cut must be square. Insert the tube back into the fitting making sure that the tubing bottoms out in the fitting. Pull back a bit on the tube to seat the "fingers" into the tube.
The schrader valve in the stem will leak down as well. Do the soapy water test on it as well.
The tubing is very thin walled as well. Find a local store that carries the 1/4" OD tubing with a thicker wall.
If you still have a leak down after that, it's in the shocks.

Received a call this morning from the service writer at my HD store. The overnight leak down test showed a loss of 3psi in about a 20 hour period. Even thou it did not meet their service requirement of a 5 - 10psi loss, they still checked the lines and fittings and found one fitting that was leaking by which they fixed.

I want to thank all that responded. Even thou my problem was an obvious fitting leak, I still do not believe that the HD "standard" of losing 1psi per day sitting (and even more when ridden) is normal. Think I'll start looking for a sale on some Progressive non-air shocks.

I had a problem with my Arnotts and traced it back to a gasket on one of the lines was cocked. I cut it off and straightened it and no more leaks. It's usually a lot easier to check it yourself before you go to dealer. That way you know what they are telling you is gospel or bs. :D

they really shouldn't leak much at all, on my RK and my old ultra I would lose a pound every couple of months if that much, I bought JRI's before I sold my ultra for my RGU so they are sitting on my RGU now, they are great shocks
