Coming up on two years of owning my first Harley. It's a nice bike with a great ride that fits my style of riding these days (comfortable cruising). But my warranty is almost up and it's track record has not been the greatest.

Front tire had rot - replaced under warranty. Front rotors warped - replaced under warranty. Just started having a problem with flashing indicator lights and they replaced the voltage regulator. Now they are tearing into the primary but the tech 'heard something'.

So if they find something that too will get fixed under warranty. But now I'm worried. Warranty is running out and I've had fair amount of things go wrong on what is basically a new bike. I baby the crap out of this bike. I don't pound on the engine. The bike has 11k on it, btw.

So now it comes down to gambling that most of the 'known' bad things have been replaced and other than regular maintenance it will be fine for a longer time, or get the extended warranty just in case, or sell it off while the value is still high and everything is in perfect working order and go with my second choice.

Anyone else out there wrestled with this dilemma? Which way did you go?

I'm not bashing, and don't want a flame war. Just honest opinions about others who have had these types of issues occur. For those that did and elected to stay with your HD, how were the next several years, several thousand miles?

If you really like the bike and don't have something else you want then I say buy the extended warranty, it is really cheap insurance, plus it has some protections built in.
1. You can cancel it and get a pro-rated refund if you want.
2. You can transfer if you decide to trade/sell the bike.

I think the warranty is a no brainer, considering how even a little problem could run a few hundred bucks.

If you're going to keep the bike and leave it stock, I would recommend the ESP with tire & wheel, you can always cancel it for a rebate.

Or, like you mentioned, if there's something else that you want, sell/trade while the value is there.

Also, ESP has a good margin for the selling Dealer, so there is room for negotiation... or a 20% off dealer.

This is exactly it, and is the reality behind warranties and extended service contracts. It's all a gamble, and luck of the draw. My bike is an '11, has 23,000 miles on it, and has not had one single issue that would have fallen under any warranty.


BTW, I do not buy warranties, never have, and should be far enough ahead now that they won't catch up with me any time soon.

Gamble is true-I think of it like insurance-you dont need it until you really need it...pay me now, or maybe pay me later. It depends on individual situations, some products I never buy warranty (like best buy or walmart always trying to sell them) because I figure I can always buy another whatever because I can afford it, big ticket items I think a little more about-will i be in a position to get it fixed or replaced if it does break? On my bike I opted to do the three year-may never use it but if I need to it will pay for it. I am taking the gamble.

I've got 74K on my 2008 RG. I renewed my ESP for another 5 yrs. @ 67K. Since then I've had a $2,450 repair that cost me a little over $200. I had $150. in an up grade done otherwise it would have cost $50.
On my way home from SW IV. I had a inner primary Brg. go bad. I made it home OK. the repair was $343. my cost $50. My ESP has paid for itself already and I'm good till November of 2017. So I'm sure I'll be needing it again. But the nice part is, when I'm on a road trip and something happens I don't have to budget for the unexpected. And I get a Motels covered if I'm out of town. Dam shame my last trouble didn't happen going to SW IV. LOL

Question is. Can you trade your current bike in for what you want for the cost of buying the ESP? I don't think so. The choice is yours.

I recently traded in a bike that I still had 1 year left on my extended warranty. I think I got more for my trade in not because they wanted the remaining warranty to sell with bike, but because they knew that my bike was not at risk of costing them money to fix it to sell it. After all, if something was wrong with it, they knew I would have taken care of it since I had the warranty. They kept the warranty in affect until they checked it out real well. Then they allowed me to cancel the warranty after trade in so I could get my pro-rated refund for the remaining warranty period.

Great replies and info all - thanks!

I do really like the bike's ride. I test rode a bunch of nice, high-end great riding bikes (Gold Wing, BMW K1600GLT, etc.) and the RG beat them all. Plus it was actually the least expensive.

I'd like to keep it. What can I expect to pay for an extended warranty? I admit I don't know much about them as I usually avoid them with most products.

I bought my ESP when I bought my "09. It was near the end of the ESP when I was just at 74k. I had had my Alternator go out (On the road in Texas). Replaced under the ESP. I had the Main Bearing go out at home. It took two weeks to fix and I had a Loaner Bike. That paid for the first purchase so I renewed the ESP for another 5 years. It cost me $2100. And two weeks ago, I was in Las Vegas. The Fuel Pump went out. I had the repairs done under the ESP. It cost me the deductible, but would have cost me around $500. I have the ESP until 2018 and is transferable, if I sell my RG. (for a new Wet Head?)

I didn't leave mine "Stock". I have the "Stage One" installed (Intake/Exhaust/ECM Recalibration). It was done by the dealer and didn't effect my ESP.

And the "Tire & Wheel" option on the ESP is great if you have a problem with bad roads. It is for "Road Hazard" on the Wheel and Tire. It will not replace your tire if you just wear it out. So if you don't put many miles on your bike, the Tire Option on the ESP may be good. It will replace the tire for Age Rot as well as nails in the road. But if you wear out the tire every year, you will raise questions if you come in every year to ask for a new tire due to "Road Hazard" problems.

But if you purchase the ESP, it is just insurance. So get it if you feel more at ease with it. I travel almost every year and don't worry when I take trips cross country. I have the money for my trips, not repairs.

I generally don't buy warranties either but at 40,000 miles I'm now faced with a completely ruined engine. The rebuild is base priced @ $3900 provided I do nothing more than I planned. Well that ship has sailed too and it will likely be $5000 before I'm through, or more. I still may do head work. If you're gonna keep the guts of the engine basically stock, it may prove to be good insurance. If you're gonna pump it up anyway, you'll likely void the warranty, so you may choose to skip it. Decisions, decisions...

I would never likely do more than stage one with air, pipes and tuner, and I would likely have it done by my dealer.

I should mention that unlike many, I love my dealer, including the service department. I do all my own basic servicing on the bike but for the bigger or warranty stuff I've always let them.

They have always been a very good dealership to work with. I travel about an hour to go to them and I have three HD dealerships closer - one right in my town - that I would not buy oil filters from. (Okay, I do buy oil filters from them, but you get my gist.)

I guess I'll have to talk to them in a few days when I pick up the bike. I didn't hear anything back to today so I'm assuming they found something in the primary. Funny, I didn't 'hear' anything funny coming from the primary but I'm also new to this type of bike.

So it sounds like buying the ESP is about $2g and that's for three years? It's nice that they let you keep extending it. I do like the fact that it's transferable and I can definitely see where that would add value to the bike when selling as it would help put the buyer at ease knowing he's getting a safe bet.

More food for thought.

Bottom line is, if you do a lot of touring or don't work on them ,get the extended warranty. It will pay for it self on the road when you break down. Even if you do work on them and do a lot of touring, it might be a good choice. You can only fix so much on the side of the road with tools you keep on the bike.

Yeah what Big Gary said! ESP's are negotiable, shop around at different dealers! I found a three year for $1200 from another dealer and my dealer matched it...down from the original $1750 quoted when my last bike original ESP ran out. It payed for itself a couple of times over for work I had to get done. ESP's have saved me more money than they cost. Good luck, shop around and negotiate!

Here's a question: I so all my own basic maintenance - is that a problem with the the ESP? Do they require that they being doing the basic maintenance?

No, keep a log and receipts. What will cause a voided warranty is modification. Even then you got the Magnuson Moss warranty act going for you.

Remember all HD ESP plans are negotiable so shop around, I got 5 years of HD ESP for $1200 I did not get the tire and wheel package which IMO is a waste of money.

More good news. I like that 5 years for $1,200... Is that 5 additional years after the 2 year warranty expires? That seems like a great deal. How hard did you have to shop/negotiate to get that price? And how long ago? I think I'd jump at that price.

I agree that I would probably not get the wheel/tire. I stay close to home and our roads are pretty good. I don't ride much at night and try my best to avoid huge crap in the road!

When I bought my ESP with my Purchase of my new '09, it was for 5 years (it included the 2 year Factory Warrantee), but was really the last 3 years with just the ESP. When I renewed the ESP for another 5 years last December (2013), it cost me $2100. I was right at the 75K mile cut off and could not shop around for a better price without going over the mileage cut off. :( I know if I went over the mileage cut off, I was done. I am happy with it going to 2018 with no limit on mileage. :D

First I must say you do have a good dealer if your mechanic heard something and decided to look into it most of them won't do that and it sounds like you've got problems with your bike like I do mine but I love my bike so I don't want to get rid of it after they replaced the motor at 393 miles I talk them in to giving me the extended warranty but I think the extended warranty from my dealer is around 1900 to 2100
