Came out to the garage yesterday to find a "half dollar" sized puddle of coolant just to the right of the water pump below the right hand lower. Cleaned up the mess and once again same thing this morning. Called the dealership and was told to see if it does it again and they will come pick it up and handle it. I'm actually glad that it happened now with snow on the ground as opposed to the spring time as to not cut into riding time! I'm pretty sure its leaking from one of the clamps on the coolant line and not the pump or the overflow. Also noticed its about a half inch down from the cold mark on the reservoir.

Yeah, lets hope it is something simple like that. Keep us posted.

So what if this happened to you out on the road? These engines have been air cooled for years, so if you were to run out of coolant couldn't you just ride it to the dealer without any issue to get the coolant leak fixed? What would be the issue, if any? I'm just curious...

Well two days now and no leaking. We had a really cold snap for a few days (sub-zero bullshit) I wonder if that had an effect on it? Its going to dip into the negative numbers again tomorrow, I guess we will see what happens.

08poglide, I think the service writer wanted to see if the temperature had an effect on it first. He did also say that there is now way that it should be leaking and that it will be handled. In a perfect world they would want to have the bike ridden and up to temp to see what is going on, but with all the snow on the ground and the temps that's just not happening.

RGKen, My understanding is that the wetheads can be ridden with no coolant but not advisable for long term use.

Well after dipping into the negative numbers again it appears that the leak is back as witnessed by the coolant on the floor again. Looks like I'll give the dealership a call and have her picked up. It has to be weather related as it seems to only occur when it gets really cold

Hopefully it's nothing serious, but sounds like it might be an expensive fix. You should just pony up for the 120R and not have to worry about it anymore.

Have you not seen the advisory to bring them inside during cold weather, I am reporting you to the SPCMC (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to MotorCycles)

Sad thing is that it is inside, negative numbers last night again and the garage is at about 30 degrees.

Well got word from the service writer today, apparently it's a bad clamp. He told me that they are going to go ahead and replace all the plumbing in the lower just to be safe. They have another Limited in the shop that did the same thing, same location as well. While she's there they are going to replace my speedometer as well, I've got some goop on the inside of the glass (not the first time they've seen this either).

Glad it was simple fix and they are taking care of it properly. I spoke with the SPCMC lawyers and they agreed not to prosecute you since you seem like a nice owner and took care of the problem.

Well she finally made it home yesterday, everything appears to be in good shape. now if only spring would hurry up and get here all would be good in the world! We are supposed to hit mid 50's tomorrow and she could use some gas, I guess I'll see what the roads look like.

Coolant Issues

I know this sounds dumb but (since I have no experience with the new coolant system) the cooling circuit must contain some kind of antifreeze. Correct? Maybe the spot you have documented is overflow from water in the coolant freezing. Like a sophisticated frost plug from back in the day to prevent the family auto motor blocks from fracturing in Northern MN winters where I come from. Owner Manual say anything?

Since you live where it's cold for much of the year, you should have ordered the "cold weather package" for $219.95. Once you take it out of the package you find out that it's simply a "Depends" size 2XL with the HD logo on it that you wrap around the engine whenever the temps dip below 32 degrees. If it makes you feel less 'manly' to have to use a Depends on your bike, I live in Florida and will trade you straight up for my 2011. just a thought .....
