I don't know what I did wrong but I bought the ace hardware store well nuts...10/32 - Installed my new Mako shield tonight... when finished, the shield was loose as a goose. The ace well nuts are even smaller at the "flange" area. I tried and tried but the windshield is so loose there is no way I would take it for a ride at speed. I have been trying to find the thread that does away with the well nuts altogether but haven't been able to find it.

If anyone can enlighten me on the subject... I would really appreciate it. I have a trip coming up next weekend and if I have to order online I am going to have to pay for overnight shipping.

Also... I did use the OEM rubber trim at the bottom of the shield if that makes a differrence.

Did you use the thick rubber washers that help keep the well nuts from pushing into the fairing or just the well nuts? Also, try the well nuts from Madstad or Cee Bailey's. They are waaaaay better than stock or the hardware store version.

Ironmark is the member that started the thread about getting rid of the well nuts, can be found here:

Also, Scootin sells well nut "upgrade kits" on eBay or direct if you PM him. Here are links to his thread & eBay auction:

I personally have no experience with Ironmarks mod but I have bought the well nuts from Scootin and they are far superior to the stock ones.

That eBay link is where I just got a new set to go with a LRS Mako. Very nice set-up.

thanks for the info guys. I am installing a mako as well. I ordered scootin's well nuts and if that doesn't cut it I will try the more permanent solution.

From the pictures on ebay - They are way thicker at the top of the nut than the ones I bought at westlake/ace hardware. The hardware store ones appeared to be same as OEM if not cheesier.

And yes I did use the thick washers.
