I have 10,000 miles on my 2017 RGU. I read the operator’s manual regarding the preload shock setting for my height, weight, and style of riding. 5’7”, 185, ride solo and love curves. I’m certainly no racer, but ride aggressively in the mountains on trips to Arkansas. I had the preload set to 8. This weekend, while riding some curves around a local lake, I decided to experiment, and cranked it to 15. Can’t describe the difference, other than to say awesome. New bike. Just wondering if anyone has some feedback for the adjustment on the stock shock. I never plan to change away from stock.

I no longer run those shocks so I can't chime in on the setting but I am curious as to how height affects preload of the shocks?

I don’t know that height affects the preload number in any way. Just trying to give an overall description of the rider and riding style, and see how that compares with the number others choose. I will say that moving up to 15 made the RGU easier to get on and off its center stand. I don’t know if 15 is anywhere near “normal” for other riders who are running stock.

I don't have much to contribute due to the fact that the OEM shocks never were suited for me. I only weigh 140 lbs "soaking wet" my setting was 0 and still the shocks wouldn't budge an 1/2 inch. This is my 4 HD with these shocks and each time I swap them out for either Ohlins or Legends, which allow for lighter springs and sag adjustment.

Preload should be set based on measurements made regarding full stroke of the shock, and sag when the rider and gear are on the bike. Usually the sag is set to 1/3 the stroke of the shock as a starting point.

Setting the preload to a harder setting to reduce sag will slightly change the steering geometry and allow the bike to turn in easier. It will also provide a little more lean angle. The negative will be shock stroke on rougher roads and the possibility of reducing traction if the rear of the bike rises to where it hits the end of the shock stroke and the momentum lifts the tire with it.
