To tell you the truth, I fished around between 10 and 45 and I could not tell a whole lot of difference. I was never able to get them where they felt good so I ditched them for a set of Supershox.

Unless HD shocks are something magical, adding air is to set the preload so when you have the bike weighed down with luggage and passengers the suspension is in the middle of it's travel. This helps keep the bike from bottoming out the suspension.

I adjust the air based on whether I have a passenger and/or luggage.

I am surprised these shock don't have adjustable damping.

Just curious what's a good psi to be running in my stock shocks on 13 fltrx? Running solo @ 235lbs
I'm a little heaven then you and run 38 psi 1up.

The rear shouldn't sag more than a 1/3rd of the shock travel when loaded. Measure the bike with no air and empty between the bottom shock bolt and the strut. Now sit on the bike and get someone to measure and adjust air until you get it to settle in at 1/3rd travel with you on it. Whatever that air pressure is, is what you should run one up. Do the same test with you and your wife and try to keep it at somewhere between the 1/3rd and 1/2 of travel. Now you have the two air pressures you need. By the way, I've got a set of HD premium shocks I'd sell. I'll post pics if I list them.

Unfortunately that doesn't work with the stock shocks. Let all the air out and they don't bottom out, nor do they even sag 1/3 of travel.

Follow the guide in the manual. I go about 200 with gear on, and I run around 32psi.

Of course it doesn't, it is a regular shock that is air assisted. The same principle still applies on putting the proper amount of air to keep as much travel as possible while keeping a decent ride.

Except that it's not possible with the stock shocks, as - regardless of air pressure - they don't sag like a regular shock. The 1/3 rule doesn't apply to the stock shocks, as the air pressure doesn't give you full (really, any) control over sag.

Cookie I'm glad you posted this thread. I've still got stock shocks on 13RGU and never liked them. I'm about 185 and run about 25 solo. Won't list wife's weight  but she's fairly small. We run 48-50 2 up. Almost pulled the trigger on new shocks about a year ago. Think I'll just stay w stock now.

One of the first things that I replaced on my 2011 FLTRX was those shitty air shocks. I went with Terry Cable coil over's.

I've tries several other coil over brands on my 01 Road King and never really could get the results that I wanted like the Terry Cable shocks. You can call him and he will talk to your about building a custom set up like he did for me at Street Vibrations a couple of years ago. Just a suggestion not a sales pitch.

Doesn't matter how much air you put in them, they will bottom out because they're junk.

I converted to monroe shocks and have NEVER bottomed out with 2-up at about 400lb total rider and passenger.

Run them at 90 lbs pressure and it's like riding on a cloud.
