why would you, or DID you buy air cooled?

I currently have a 2011 RGU, I like it a lot, its my "new bike", my old bike was a 2001 EG standard.

when I had my old TC88 I could ride in shorts, not recommended I know but in Florida....:wink:

well, as we all know the TC 103 is hot mother "F".... mine had no fuel management and still had a CAT when I bought it (used), on the ride home when picking it up I was stuck in traffic briefly and I got a good exposure to just how friggen hot that bike was. at the time I was wearing regular jeans and I thought I was on fire!

fuel management added, CAT gone, that helped, I dont ride in shorts anymore, not just for the heat reason but because its kinda dumb. 0:)

so im not really in the market for a new(er) bike yet but of course the test rides on the M-8 are tempting, and my buddy got a 2017 RGU....:surprise:

so....my question, is this. if you chose a special over an Ultra and therefor are doing without liquid cooling how do you justify that? is liquid cooling not really that big a deal? I would expect the M-8 without liquid cooling is just as hot as a TC103?

I think im an "Ultra" kind of guy but I like to ride w/out the TP and on my current bike and I have the rear speakers semi-permanently disconnected because the TP sits in the garage mostly.

my biggest needs are a stereo and I have...just have...to have cruise...

I just cant help wondering if a used M-8 special might be my next jam.

but liquid cooling seems like it would be such a good idea, especially in Florida.:nerd:

2 reasons not to choose the ultra. Extra weight & one more system to break.

I ride a stock drive line 103 15 H-D With a metal pan LePera seat. I manage the heat just fine.

I liked the special more than the ultra. The special had more parts that I would have had to change on the ultra. My wife hated my 11 RGU. Harleys have been air cooled since 1903. That "wet head" cools a valve. I do not believe that it cools it in the pipe where you really feel the heat from any better than mine. And I didn't need another system to break on me. Mine has no cat, CVO cans with fullsac baffles and a heavy breather. Also tuned with the FP3 and an extensive auto tune. With what I have invested in this bike. I'll have it a long time. Or it's my last. No want for a M8. Rode one. Nice bike. Love my TC.

I own an Ultra with 103 twin cooled, and a Road King M8 oil cooled.

The flow of air while riding moves the heat away from the engine and rider much better on a bike without lowers or windshield/fairing.

The Road Glide Ultra is much hotter for the rider because of all the wind protection, but is better for the engine if in traffic.

If I lived in Florida, I would have a Road King Special and add tunes to it.

BTW, regular jeans don't offer much more protection from road rash over shorts. They do offer a protection from the sun and a tad more protection from a hot pipe. Go with fully lined Kevlar jeans if you want some actual protection.

Try a set of the Mid-Frame air deflectors, last bike had them on it and they worked great in the hot weather. I'll let you know on heat with the new M8 as soon as Mother nNture stops throwing 35 degree days in March with the 4th Nor Easters hitting little Rhodei today! ... sorry got off on a weather tangent. And, I know the weather up here is wayyyyy different than your neck of the woods.
Like i said the Mid-Frame deflectors worked great for me.
HD has them listed as Part #58002-09A.

I have a 2016 RGU, wet head. I choose the 2016 to let the net water cooled technology work out the kinks. 2014 wet heads had leakage issues. This was fixed by having the system run the coolant while the bike is off and fans running to bring the coolant down to prevent boil over.

As for air versus water. The 2016 RGU has more torque and HP over the air cooled special while the M8 reports the same torque with air versus water cooled. If your in a lot of stop and go traffic and I mean moving 1.4 miles in 75 minutes :crying: (that was my commute yesterday).... thankfully the Mrs. made me drive; the water cooled makes a huge difference.

I can monitor my head temp with Dakota Digital gauges and my head temp in stop and go has never reached more than 285 degrees. My 2007 Ultra Classic I could monitor my head temp with the thundermax ECM logs and my head temp would get to 360 and more in top and go traffic. I even had to stop and pull over and stop and get off the bike the heat got so bad and I had deflectors.

If you don't ride in that type of environment, an M8 wet head or air cooled probably, not sure, but probably is no difference; at least per Harley's specs.

I must say that living in FL (Orlando area) is why I chose my 2017 RGU. I really wanted the cooling feature to prolong the life of my bike. I ride a 45 mile commute every day, with about 10 miles of that in stop and go traffic. I have the Vance and Hines FP3 installed with a canned tune currently. With the FP3 I can monitor various sensors while riding and I like to watch my head temp. It is nice to see that while sitting in traffic I watch my temp rise and at about 270 the rad fans kick on and I watch the temp either go down or stabilize (on really hot days).

I sometimes get together with a group of guys and do some riding. We have gotten caught in traffic and they actually turned their bikes off because they got so hot. I have never had that issue and don't worry about overheating.

Some people say that lowers reduce air flow over the engine, but I find that they actually allow you to direct air to the engine if you want, IMO.... Others have said that the special comes with more parts that you don't have to change, but I have found that you will most likely change a lot of things anyhow just to make it "your" bike.

I have Tailgunner "Gunship" slip-ons, the FP3, and recently added RCX Tormentor headpipes. Getting rid of the Cat was one of the best things I could have done. I waited for awhile to do it just because of warranty concerns, but with 16K on the bike I felt it was time.

Getting of topic but, I am happy to say the getting the RGU was the best decision I made. I love my bike and laugh when my buds have to pull over because their bikes are overheating...

I had a 13 Ultra Limited that I traded for a 17 RGU. I wanted the fixed fairing and I didn't want to give up the storage that the Tour Pak gives me. Prior to the Limited, I wore mesh boots in the summer; I tried them on the Limited and they just wouldn't cut it, way to hot. I switched to leather and haven't gone back. I was told the CAT was a large contributor to my problem, but because of the warranty, I didn't want to change it. I bought Capt'n Itch's Crotch Cooler. Its thicker leather and much larger than the plastic shields that Harley puts on, that helped. In the summer, I always removed the vent section from the lowers, so I could get more air through than the vent alone would allow. As long as I was moving, I was OK, but stopped for any period (long red lights, traffic) and I'd feel it. (For a short time initially, I kept wearing my chaps until I got the Crotch Cooler.)

With the RGU, they've moved the CAT away from the rider (I'm by myself, but I've heard it can still be a problem for a passenger). Because of the radiators, I can't remove the lower vents like I used to, but they stay open; it seems to be enough. I haven't needed the Crotch Cooler and haven't tried the mesh boots. Everything seems tolerable, except for lights and traffic, but I find that most of that heat is coming up from the black top.

On the M8, if you have it enabled, the ETIMS engages whenever the outside air temp is above 80F; that wasn't the case on the 103, it was higher. I also understand that you can add a "Parade" fan to the M8, which blows the heat forward and down. I haven't felt the need to look into it further.

I'm out in the country, in the Panhandle, so I don't normally need to deal with lots of traffic. Since November, weather and other things, have conspired to limit my riding time, so I only have 10.5K miles on the bike, so far. Right now its working for me. Someone else mentioned that the torque figures were the same, but I thought the wet heads were supposed to have a couple of percentage points more. Practically, its probably a moot point do to the extra weight.

I had a 2011 Ultra, and it was incredibly hot. A lot of the blame I placed in the fairing lowers that were on the bike limiting air flow. Only so much gets past the vents. My 2015 Special is much cooler for the rider. It has no fairing lowers on it. Both are oil cooled 103s. I had an '05 E-Glide Standard. I regret selling that bike!

MY 17 RGS M8 is definitely cooler running than my former 15 RGS. the 15 had a decat header, Cobra mufflers, Ness Big Sucker and FP3 but it still ran hotter than my 17 bone stock. Probably due to the relocated cat on the 17. I got the 17 in August so hot weather riding was easy to compare. Also, I believe that the M8 RGS does have oil cooling around the exhaust valves that the Twin Cams don't have, making for cooler engine. Obviously the M8 RGU water cooled engine is an even better cooling system. I am eagerly awaiting the expiration of my warranty on the 17 so I can put the same stage 1 upgrades on the bike that I have already purchased.

My 65 beetle is air cooled, and i live in Florida...i'm still surviving :grin::grin::grin:

My 13 road glide custom is bearable 99% of the time...removable tour pack and no lowers was more important to me though! To each his own

I grew up in New England. They way I remembered those cars, you could only get heat from them in the summer time, and they put out a lot of heat then. In the winter, when you actually wanted and needed the heat, it was no where to be found.

I know I’m about to speak heresy, but I wish Harley would just get on with it and hang a radiator on the dam bikes. EPA regs are eventually going to require it anyway. People will learn to accept it the first time they sit in traffic on a 95 degree day. Get rid of more heat and the riders and the motor will be happier.

Maybe some are more sensitive to the heat? My buddies with wet heads don't feel any cooler on their bikes, so they say. We ride in heat up to 110F.

All M8's are liquid cooled. Every one of them. Some use Oil with a big-assed oil cooler, some use the Water/Radiator setup. So all M8's tend to run cooler than Twin Cams. That was one of the principal design goals of the M8. In case you are wondering, they did add more oil capacity for this. They also setup the Engine control so that the bike turns over 3 times before it starts, to get the oil pumping.

I have a 2018 RGU (water cooled), but I have not had it long enough to get into Summer riding, so I cannot say if it really is cooler than my old 2009 TC (that was HOT). But, so far, it has been much more comfortable than the old bike.

I got by with Air cooled RGU's, rode them in some heavy traffic and heat. They survived so did I and wife. After having a 2106 RGU with wet heads and now a 2107 M8 wet heads I an not looking back. The only reason I would buy one without the cooled heads would be if I really wanted the bike and it did not come with the liquid heads.

I think going to wet heads was one of the best things Harley has done. A huge improvement to me. Water pump went out on the 16 and I could tell right away.

I live in Tampa too and own a 2011 Fltrx. When I first bought it in 2011 with a 103 motor it would burn my leg after I installed lowers on the bike. Changed the pipe to one that is ceramic coated, added a engine cooling fan, bought a TTS tuner and have never had another issue. I now have a 120 motor in the bike, sitting in heavy Daytona traffic at bike week my bike is not hot and doesn't ping. I have Dakota Digital Gauges and my bike runs cool.
