I've just installed a set of sanitary-looking HawgWired speaker grills on my '15 RGS (the OEM plastic stuff was cheap-looking on a $26K bike). I now want to upgrade to better speakers and install an amp to push those speakers as appropriate. I'd like to stay away from J&M's and HD's speaker grills with the tweeter bumps if possible with your speaker suggestions. I'm not looking for in-home or even in-car stereo sound quality ('cuz I'm on a freakin' bike at speed, right? lol). I just want better than what it came with OEM stock so I can hear it better under my half-helmet at 75-80mph behind my 12" Windsplitter....and not break the bank ('cuz my budget has to go to a EFI tuner as well.) And I have no use for bag speakers, either.

And after reading the GTO638 speaker thread, am I to understand that I should probably start with an amp (Biketronics?) and line-leveler and run the stock speakers first to see if I need anymore?

With these parameters in place, are there any suggestions by those who know better than me? Thanks!

I have a 09, not a rushmore. After talking with a guy on the other forum he steered me in the right direction. What it comes down to is how much you want to spend. As for speakers, The Kappas are the best bang for the buck. Super loud and sound really good. I bought a Cerwin Vega B2 amp. It is small and fits on top of the radio perfectly. 500 watts of clean sound. I also installed a Aquatic Av head unit at the same time. Together, the system rocks. One buddy of mine installed a hog wired setup after I did mine.2 fairing speakers and speaker lids. It sounds good. Not as loud or as clear as mine, but it is hard to compare because he has the stock head unit.
You can find the Kappas for less than $130. If you want to spend more, the Biketronics speakers and Arc Motos get great reviews on the other forum.

I don't want to swap out the stock 6.5 Boom head unit. I just want better speakers that'll fit under the hawgwired grills and an amp that'll do the speakers justice. Truth be known, my bike's handling, comfort, performance, and style theme are ultimately more important to me than the quality of sound that comes out of my speakers. This doesn't mean, however, that I don't care about at all about the quality of sound that comes out of my stereo system...because I do. I want the most bang for my $500~$600 buck.

Kappa 62.11i speakers are about the best bang for your buck. I'm running a Cerwin-Vega B2 and I love the AMP, but they are getting harder to find. The revision to the B2 (aka B52) is impossible to find. I've got my AMP paired with a set of the Kappas.

Soundstream AMPS get lots of lovin' depending on the model number. Also be careful when picking the AMP and speaker combination. For example; the SS Soundstream pn4.520 is a four channel AMP. It can be bridged into two channels, but the result is 2 channels at 4 ohms. Bridging the 4 channels into 2 gives you a great power bump, but you would want to pair that with 4 ohm speakers, not 2 ohm speakers.

I wouldn't recommend using a 4 channel amp unless you are driving 4 speakers or you are going to bridge the 4 channels into 2 channels. I would avoid running just two speakers and not having any load on the empty channels. Hope this makes sense. If not ask questions and I'll do my best to answer.

My first choice would be the Biketronics amp and speaker kit, won't mess with your fm reception, lifetime warranty and with your forum discount would be just over $600. Second choice would be the kappas and PBR 300x2, won't mess with fm reception and well under $600. Good luck.

Biketronics makes GREAT gear, their customer service is 2nd to none and their warranty can't be beat.

But...... The lack of an adjustable gain on their AMPS makes them a "no-go" for me. I want that fine level of control.

I have seen that Thread before and those guys do know their stuff but can't recall if anyone had put one of those SS pn4 1000 in a road glide. I thought maybe you would know since you suggested that amp. I have heard a lot of good things about it.

My Cerwin-Vega B2 is installed lengthwise right under the head unit. By lengthwise I mean that the front of the amp is pointed towards the dash and the rear of the amp is pointed towards the headlight.

You wouldn't have any problems with the width or the height, but the length is going to be a tight squeeze. If you can't find a CV B2 or B52, I would (my opinion of course) buy the Soundstream from somewhere with a generous return policy (like Amazon maybe :)) and see if you can devise a way to squeeze it in there.

Don't do any other work until you confirm a fit. My only concern with length is because of how far the headlight assembly intrudes into the fairing enclosure when everything is buttoned up. If you're going to have any interference it will be between the back of the headlamp housing the front/rear of the AMP depending on how your orientate it.
