Garmin Zumo 660 vs Road Tech 660, For several weeks I researched the boards to see if I could determine the real difference between the Garmin and RT units. Most everyone said the RT was exactly the same unit. However, went to the dealer to have the NIM installed and the Garmin Zumo would not work correctly on the bike. The tech said he could make it work by wiring to aux, but it would not work exactly as it was meant too. Being that it would not override music and such and that it would not be like the Road Tech version.

Why is it that no one at the dealer or Garmin will tell you the real whole truth. That being said, if you want your GPS to work properly with the NIM, then you MUST buy the Road Tech version, because the internal tones of the Garmin Zumo doesn't communicate properly with Harley NIM.

The rest of the story is this. The tech who installed my NIM did not realize that I had brought him a Garmin and when it would not work properly, they called me to inform me want was happening. So I told them to take it back off and I would exchange it for a RT after I had returned the Zumo. The service writer said well we would have to charge for the hours to take it back off. That really P---ed me off.

So went to talk with the service manager, and we determined that the power cord of the two (the part connected to the bike) was the exact same for a RT as the Zumo. So I broke down and purchased the RT and exchanged the power cords so I could return or resell the Zumo.

And after I got home, I compared the contents of the two boxes and what was inside the RT vs Garmin was not the same. The Garmin came with different accessories than the RT.

If anyone wants to purchase really good ZUMO 660 send me a PM. I barely had it out of the box, long enough to register it. I am asking $550 for it and I will pay to have it shipped. I own a business and I do have a credit card machine it want to use one.

follow up

As follow up to my situation, I finally researched it enough to now say, that the Zumo 660 is different than the RT 660. According to what I have read. Apparently the internal tone that is used by the device to communicate through the NIM is different.

So if you want your GPS to work with the NIM, then you have to have a Road Tech version.

People that install stuff at the dealer should disclose this to you before you get everthing installed.
