I bought the 350 dollar chopped tour pack with backrest off amazon. Spent 100 bucks on paint from Colorrite and paid painter 100 to shoot it. Color match is spot on. But I'm a cheap fucker! Same Colorrite paint on the 3d printed lowers

Question, did you buy a pint or a quart of paint to shoot the chopped pack?
Looking to do the same.
Thanks,
JB

Good deals are a matter of perspective. Thing are cheap for a reason. 🤷‍♂️
I could argue the inverse of this.. Things are NOT always expensive for the same reason. I have NO problem paying up for quality when there is a compelling reason. But often, we are just paying up for the badge, logo or for a lack of understanding.

You can believe or not. There is a significant difference between the HD part and knock offs. All you have to do is put em side by side by side.

Have you found this to be universally true? From my research the AB and HW tour packs are of decent quality. I read a lot of reviews, and found that the OEM mounting/docking hardware was significantly better, so I paid up for that. **Even though one reviewer stated the only point of distinction was the hardware and bushings, which could be upgraged to the Harley parts.. I also bought an aftermarket passenger back-rest. Cost was less than 1/2 of OEM, and performs about as well as anyone could ask. Admittedly, I have not rode/tested the HD pass-backrest.. but I have looked at them and from a passing review, don't seem worth the premium cost..

I didn't say that HD, OEM parts are "Never" better.. Only that I have found the "you get what you pay for" argument to only prove out about 50% of the time. Shoot.. look how many people swear by aftermarket big bore kits, or tuners compared to the SE parts?

As always... YMMV

I can get picky if it makes it crank, run or stop but on some items such as bags, fairings, tour packs, etc. not so much. I really wonder if some of this stuff doesn't have the same origin. My bags are from Canada (Nasty Hog) and are great. Lower fairings and tour pack are from an alphabet company with no complaints. Three moto camping trips through 4 states with tour pack stuffed and is looking and functioning good. A lot has to do with what function it serves and is it worth five to ten times the price knowing it might be pretty much the same.

@Caveeagle I can tell you this. When I was shopping and looking at the differences between the AB and MoCo chopped tour packs @craigffb did me a solid and steered me to the MoCo one. I purchased it and after getting it I had an opportunity to see an AB one in person. I will 100% tell you that when the lids are open there is a lot of flex in the AB tub when you rock the lid in the open position. The MoCo one barely flexes.

I got a pint and it covered the entire tour pack, but not as heavy a coat as I'd prefer. IT's spendy paint, but the next time I do a full pint and not just 8oz.

That’s apples and oranges comparison there. Comparing cheap Chinese parts for a tour pack and American made and engineered engine parts that out perform SE parts. The Aftermarket comparison to SE isn’t quality driven. But performance driven. I believe the quality of the cams and other parts to be on par with the aftermarket. I’ll be using the SE parts to upgrade my 02 Softail because I can save a bunch and still have quality parts.

To stay on topic. I sprung for the oem chopped tourpak and with my 15% off it wasn’t much more than aftermarket. Also sprung for the oem Lowers.

I recently purchased an AdvanBlack color matched tour pack for my new 22 special. Color match is really pretty good. Tour pack quality... It is definitely more flimsy than an HD tour pack. The cord that keeps the tour pack from flopping open is too long and lets the lid flap open too far. And the latch doesn't operate as smoothly as HD. Also, the hinge color options were chrome and black, the "hinges" on my saddlebags are color matched. If I were planning to run it 100% of the time, I'd be bummed it's not as good as HD. As it is, it was $950, color matched, with mounting, and shipped. A LOT cheaper than HD. If money were no object, I wish I had the HD unit.
Replace all hardware with HD branded hardware.

I purchased a Advanblack Detachable King Tour Pak Kit In Vivid Black. It included the complete Tour Pak, Detachable mount, and Docking Kit. All in Vivid Black. Identical look at a great cost savings.
But, I found the lid latch loosely held the lid. And it eventually fell off because the screws didn’t hold. So I replaced it with the HD latch. Higher cost, but great fit. And still less cost than the HD unit.

I have the Advanblack chopped tourpak and have been very happy with it. It’s on a detachable mount and I will only use it maybe 3 or 4 times a year for trips. The other 325 days of the year it will hang in my garage…. I purchased it used off another forum so had to have it paint matched and my buddy did a great job…….. Another buddy has the TCMT chopped tourpak purchased off Amazon. We compared them side by side and they are identical, even down to the mold marks…. It’s pretty obvious they are made in the same Chinese factory. He paid under $300 bucks for his new. I bought my used Advanblack for $300 and spent another $100 on paint and a case of beer for my buddy…. Both of ours came with the passenger backrest…. I spent another $75 for the detachable setup off Amazon to replace the hard mounting on my bastardized Ultra……. Today I ordered a replacement backrest from Saddlemen that matches the fabric and stitching of my SDC seat…..

That’s a Razor. The chopped is significantly bigger then that.

Maybe it was a Razor, never paid much mind to that as I liked the low profile. Re-homed the OEM Ultra King TP to TxSmoker who travels with his wife. My OL does not pillion…. I travel very light and typically get everything I need in just the two saddlebags. The tourpack just makes it easier……

so from the OP...I went with the Advanblack king tour pack but had them put the small backrest on it,. Paint is a great match and fit is spot on.

I went TCMT because I will rarely run it. All in I’m at $306 (king tp, two up mount and mounting plate) and I got it because a friend ordered his with all the extras (speakers, backrest, lights etc) and it’s a pretty solid piece, mine is plain but it’s all I want/need. If it will latch and remain water tight for my trips I’m good.
funny to see how some say to use or that others say they have used HD hardware yet so many don’t believe that they’ve came out of the same mold… mold markings the same… I bet if put a set of calipers on the different brands they’re pretty much the same.

Point me in the direction of the MoCo chopped tour pack…
Never heard of MoCo…

Don’t really want to hijack this thread or start a new thread and hopefully everyone got what they needed on the TourPacks but….

Fairing Spoiler… I’m in the market even tho I’m two-tone I think I’m going to go VB but wondering the same… AdvanBlack or HogWorks??

Thanks in advance and apologies if anyone is adverse to my hijacking.
