I have a pre Rushmore bike and I recently noticed that Harley Davidson no longer puts the heel shifter on the newer models. I know it can be easily added but I always upshift with my heel. I find it's smoother, easier, and the toes of my boots don't get scuffed up. Besides me, who else uses the rear shift lever?

I like the heal shifter but only seem to use it when shifting from first into second gear when taking off from a dead stop. Many years ago I got in the habit of hitting second gear with my heal as I bring my foot up to the floor board, then use my toe the rest of the way through the gears. Been doing it so long that at this point if I were to remove the heal shifter I certainly would miss it.

My boots don't fit between the shifters.

I've been riding something for 45 years, and cannot get my mind to press down to upshift. To foreign to me.

On that note, anyone need the back half of a rocker shift lever (Willie G collection)

FNG here, again.

I wear size 14 boots and ran all manner of extended heel-toe shifters.

I just put a stock heel shifter on my new-to-me ’22 RGS I bought last week and have all the room I need on the footboard. Plus I don’t have to reach as far in either direction to hit the shifters, up or down.

I use the rear shifter always. Every touring Harley I’ve ever had came with one and I was kinda miffed that they deleted from the 21 RGL. I purchase and extended one for my bike to free up some floorboard real estate for my big feet.
I Bought my 1999 new from Boston H-D. That was the first thing I did was take the rear shifter peg off and put a button head in it's place. Basically made it a primary protector. To each his own.

IAs far as shifter/shaft problems go I never had problem, but I also don’t stomp on the heel shifter like some people do.

I only had a problem once on my 05 Road Glide. The spline was almost completely worn out. FIrst, I put heim joints on my shift rod. Also, I always check and tighten everything involving my shift levers when I do my routine service every 5K miles. I haven't had a problem since.

My 19 RG FLTRX came new with a heel shifter, but after riding for 35 years with only a toe shifter, toe shifting is so ingrained in me I can't break the habit. My boots would look better if I would break that habit and use the heel shifter. The only time I use it is when I lean over my bike to put it in neutral by hand before cold starting it while off the bike.

Each to their own....but if you do a lot of long-distance riding you might want to consider taking it off in order to give you more room to move your foot around. I started taking mine off after I retired because now, I'm able to ride 25,000+ miles a year and without it I can easily find a more comfortable positions for my foot/leg.
