Ride Tracking

I’ve been using REVER for tracking my rides. I submitted to 1K in a Day and IBA with results from that. I have had some issues with it stopping the track mid ride. I like the data that it provides after a ride as well as the breadcrumbs that it leaves should I want to remember where I have been.

HD Ride Planner does tracking as well, but I haven’t been that impressed with its functionality. I have it set up to start recording as soon as my phone connects, but the problem is that every time I stop, it stops the recording. It creates a new ride afterwards. Not sure if that can be corrected.

I signed up for a free trial of Spotwalla, but haven’t used or messed with it. That seems complicated as hell but that is because I haven’t jumped into it. I know a lot of long range riders use this.

Anyway…I’m looking for tracking recommendations. What do you all use? How do you use Spotwalla if you do use that? I fully intend on sticking with my current plan of building routes in REVER/HD Ride Planner/Google Maps (I use all three to build my routes). I also use a combination of Waze/Google Maps/HD Ride Planner for navigation. I don’t plan on getting away from that. I’m just looking for the best all around tracking program that will help should I decide to submit more long rides and for remembering routes taken. Any help is appreciated.

Using Rever Pro version, I have not seen the issue of it stopping the track mid ride, are you using the free version? the free version does "tracking" only so my guess would be if your device lost connectivity the tracking may stop? in pro you plan and save the route so it can operate much like Waze or google maps when the coverage is bad or interrupted they calculate location based on earlier data elements, thus it keeps the route running.
I also did consider MyRoute but the cost model was pretty steep at that time (not sure what it is now) rever is 40.00 a year for pro MyRoute was something like 24.00 a month. I did not test Spotwalla when i looked at it seemed to be more of a social tracking application, similar to life360 but with route plan capability.

I'm a Pro Version user of REVER. I have only had the issue on 3 or 4 rides in the past where it stopped recording. It happened about three times during my last trip so I'm just looking for options. Fortunately it did not happen while we were completing our Iron Butt ride because that is what I submitted to IBA for certification (still waiting on that from them). I don't use REVER to actually navigate when I travel though. I find their navigation lacking. I mainly use it for planning and tracking. When actually navigating I use a combination of Google, Waze, and HD Ride Planner (well not this one anymore since I ordered SoundStream V2). I find live traffic updates and speed traps more important to me than using REVER itself. Now if they could update that, I would love it especially since you get the weather built into the app.

I've never looked at MyRoute. You are the second person to mention it as @Yellow09SERG said something earlier. I may have to look at it.

I am looking into Spotwalla once I retire and get a personal cell phone. The advantage of spotwalla is the ability to share your location with others. If you don't need that capability other apps may be better for you.

Currently, I periodically text my wife where I am and where I am headed. If I find a cool detour she has no idea where I am if something happens before I get to the next location where I would text her. I can cover a lot of area in 90 minutes.

if you do not mind 2 apps, look into life360 to share your location, the free version works great and runs in the background, you can build a circle of friends, a family circle, etc and see all the movement real time. Then you can get the best route planning app as well (IMO is Rever Pro). I had my kids on life360 growing up and was able to have a piece of mind that i could always find them (at least their phone) if I had to plus it shows the last 48 hours of movement so you can be back tracked if needed, also told me how fast they were driving..

Go back into the app and turn off the VIS. I tried it when it first came out and didn't like it because of exactly what you just mentioned. I just manually start it like I've always done.

Spotwalla isn't super intuitive at first, but a breeze once you get used to it. Do you use an Apple or Android phone?

I'd be happy to make a video explaining some of the ins-and-outs such as taking photos along the way and making sure they are uploaded/timestamped to your route, creating a map, etc. It will be quick and easy from there 👍

That would be awesome. We are an Apple family. I’m all for something that helps track these routes that we take. I want to remember them all as the years go by.

Agree with @Scott7d that spotwalla is a pretty easy system to use once you have it initially configured to receive whatever source(s) of data you’re gonna be tracking your ride with. But, it in itself is NOT for tracking. It’s basically a database for storing that tracking data, and, as @twowheeladdict said you can share links with others to track you in (almost) realtime. For Spotwalla to work, you still need to pick one (or more) systems to actually create the “breadcrumbs”.

For apple phone users, there used to be an app called SW connect that did that. I’m sure rever can create the breadcrumbs too. For most of us really into distance riding and members of the IBA, we end up deciding to add a satellite tracker to our equipment - either a SPOT device or a Garmin InReach. (There are a few lesser known brands, but those are the two most popular). The advantage of those devices are connectivity outside cell service, reliability, and use in an emergency to notify the authorities and/or relatives. Various models of them have different capabilities… happy to help with that if it’s of interest. The disadvantage is there’s another device to buy, keep charged (either charging non-replaceable batteries, or keeping an eye on the batteries and replacing them from time to time) and pay for - service is usually in the range of $200-250 a year (depending on the device, whether you’re annual or monthly, etc.)

Spotwalla also has a nominal fee (just changed it to an annual membership from a semi-complicated charge per use model). No one is getting rich of Spotwalla - they’re just recouping the costs of hosting the service.

Happy to help with anything setup related too…pm me, if you need help.

Hoka Hey #1003

Well said! Off topic but do you know Jon Meadows? Aka "Tripod". He's a Hoka Hey finisher so just curious. Much respect to you all for attempting that! He's not far from me and we ride together here and there.

@DannyDaPorkchop There are also some helpful YouTube videos for Spotwalla. Let me know if you need any further help from there. I have Android so the other gentleman that chimed in may be able to help more.
