Great writeup. I lack the ability to discern info in Barney books. The OP mentioned his 15' and 19' models, but I couldn't tell if he was able to utilize car play on his 15'.

Others appears to only mention 19'models. I have have a 18'. Will this work on that year RG? all stock.

On my '19 RGU, I have been using the wired HD set along with CarPlay. Works great (most of the time). There are times when I plug in the headset and my iPhone and CarPlay will not activate. It's frustrating at times.

Here is what I'm thinking but don't know if it's possible. If I have my GTS flashed to enable wireless headset, then get a Cardo TalkPack or non HD Sena. If I plug in iPhone and activate CarPlay so that I have Waze on the screen, can I still connect to my iPhone via bluetooth and have the prompts and music play through the wireless device while displaying CarPlay on the GTS screen? I know that if it's a non HD wireless device, then I won't get stereo sound which wouldn't work for music.

Yes. That’s essentially what I’ve been doing via my Lexin B4FM wireless headset since I got the flash done almost 6 weeks ago. I get the CarPlay audio (music, prompts...) through the B4FM. The music is in stereo, so not sure why you might think otherwise.

Thanks for your reply.

Just wasn't sure if the iPhone would still connect to the wireless headset via bluetooth if it was connected to the bike and CarPlay running. As far as the not in stereo part, my understanding of the WHIM is that you need the HD branded Sena to get stereo output. Non HD branded wireless would only get mono. If I can connect via bluetooth to the iPhone and not the GTS, then I guess it should be in stereo. I just don't want to go out and buy the Cardo system and then find that I can't really do what I want to do. I'm not enamored with the Sena units from everything that I've read and witnessed with difficulty connecting, bad reception, dropping out, etc.

The wired system works fine but after a while the headphones start to get uncomfortable.

Man I’m loving this Apple CarPlay! I added the Sirius XM app to my phone so now I can listen to ESPN or the news and even audio books. The cool part when listing to music on SiriusXM is that you can pause it rewind it or start over.

So I thought I would provide my experience here for others. One of the things about the new 2019 Boom GTS I was excited about was the ability to have Apple Car Play. I have it in my truck and love it. Use it every single day. Music, and Google Maps is pretty much an essential for me in 2019 at this point. Also kinda nice to let Siri read my text out loud while driving. SO... I really expected the same from my new 2019 Road Glide. As awesome as my new Road Glide is over the 2015 Street Glide, I was pretty disappointed to find out I had to use the new hyped radio just like i did on my 4 year older bike. Which was my iPhone plugged in via the USB and I used Google maps on my phone and music played thru my radio with changing of tracks and art work all thru the radio. Worked well enough on my 2015 model. I ended up getting a Freecom 4 wireless headset a year or two back and that worked awesome too, because I could answer a phone call in my helmet and never touch the phone.
SO then back to the 2019... Dealer says well, Apple Car Play only works if you buy the WHIM and then you have to buy the Harley Brand Headset. Wow... $100's more just to get Apple Carplay. Like $300 for the Whim, plug pay the dealer to install and then flash radio, and then the Harley Stamped head set was another $300ish... so now staring at $700+ just to get Apple Car Play to work. <img src="http://www.roadglide.org/images/RoadGlide_2015/smilies/tango_face_surprise.png" border="0" alt="" title="EEK! Surprise!" class="inlineimg" />

THen I stumbled onto this thread, and thought I might give it a try to get Carplay to work. Ran to dealer last night and paid them $49 to flash my radio. I simply said, all I want you to do is flash my radio to enable the WHIM. Took all of 5 mins for them to do. BTW... I do NOT have the WHIM. Got back on my bike after dealer flashed the radio, and plugged up my phone and BOOM... Apple Carplay. Works like a top. Now here is my other findings. Harley Headset required. Well... maybe but let me tell you my Freecom 4 works just fine as I utilize it. I dont listen to music inside my helmet. I prefer my music to play on the speakers of the bike/radio. SO that all works perfect. As for the phone use... I can still answer any phone call by pressing the same button on my Freecom 4 as I have done in past. Here is the other thing. THey tell you that Siri wont respond without the Harley headset. Well, not exactly true. I do NOT have my iPhone connected via bluetooth to the BIke at all. I use the USB cord only. I have my Freecom 4 connected to my iPhone via bluetooth (not to the radio). SO if I press the two button on my Freecom on the side of my helmet, I can now say "hey siri" call xyz... and boom. Siri calls whomever and I am off to the conversation. Music stops playing and Im on phone call. When I hang up music resumes just as before (thru my radio speakers). Google Maps or Waze, etc... all work perfectly and the audio directions play right thru the radio speakers telling you where to turn.

SO... long story short. If you want Carplay and you maybe already have a wireless headset that you have been using, I think you will find paying $50 to have the radio flashed to make it think you have a WHIM is really a great option. Hope someone can find this helpful... I am really satisfied with the outcome. The bike should be delivered off the showroom to you with this enabled. Sucks a bit to realize that Harley is disabling the feature by default when its build into the radio already. Its 2019... no new car radio or radio comes without Apple Car Play hardly. So.... on to getting some good riding!!!! Enjoy!
This is a fantastic review/walk-thru.

I have a ‘20 RG and just sent back my Sena 20s EVO and purchased the H-D version of the same headset, just to ensure that part wouldn’t cause any problems.

I’ll take it in for the 1k service in a week or so and will ask them to flash for WHIM. Not sure of the detailed settings of this, but I’ll want the music from the iPhone to either play out of the speakers or the headset. I’ll want to always talk calls and such using the headset though.

Really hoping it will work well.

One thing that I was disappointed in, and the dealer didn’t seem to know as well, was just playing music (non Apple Car Play), from the iPhone through the bike (music note button), there’s no way to play/pause using the left right joysticks. Can only turn the volume all the way down.

I’m hoping that using the Apple Car Play feature for listening to music from the iPhone, I’ll be able to play/pause.

Thanks again!
Brian

I use an old POS iPhone 5 as a dedicated music player and have full functionality I.e. skipping tracks...go forward or back...etc

ok 2hrs in the shop, with icar and my samsung s10+ plugged in to the usb, i can pull up waze and hear directions over the gts but the waze map won't show on the screen, open music with spotify or the music on the phone. can go to next song and advance selections on spotify, and get no spotify album art on the screen, and can't see the menu from music on the phone on the gts. called a freind from the bike could hear him thru the bike speakers, but with no mike couldn't talk to him. and the phone was hooked up with bluetooth to the gts. got hungry had to come into the house, tomorrow i'll see if it was doing all these conections thru bluetooth or the usb, didn't think to unplug the usb tonight.

Did you turn on the “Projection” setting on your Boom GTS? You have to do that for real CarPlay to get the image on the GTS screen. I’m guessing the icar app would require it as well.

ETA: Not meaning to be a Debbie Downer, but I’d be very surprised if the Incar app could really give you CarPlay functionality. All the reviews of the app seem to indicate it’s just acting as a shell to mimic the appearance of CarPlay; not really performing the handshake that Boom GTS would need to make it think it was really communicating with an iPhone.

didn't do the projection, will do that tomorrow, not going back out to the shop tonight.

Ok so question, how come ya can’t install a 2019 Infotainment unit on say a 2017? Just curious ....

Yes you can. There are kits out there that allow this. I install the Soundz Audio kits at work and they have a plug and play harness that doesn't make any permanent changes to the bike.

Told ya the same thing on HDForums.

I think I read that no longer works on the 2020 radios. It has a different part number. But I can’t remember exactly where I saw/heard it. If it were me the first place I’d start is the lighting cable.

Wow Craig, THAT is a downer! So, in terms of bikes straight off the dealer floor, this only works on 2019s?

I laugh at my rookie comments far earlier in this thread. I use my iPhone's Spotify and Google Maps apps all the time on the Boom now for music while riding and navigation ha ha ha. And I'm quite happy with the stock Boom set-up.

Yeah Dave. Like I said I don’t know for sure but I saw it posted. I just can’t find it now. To me people not taking advantage of the voice activation are missing out. It’s the best part.
